Why Medical Grade Matters
Hook and loop fasteners used in medical devices — orthopedic braces, blood pressure cuffs, hospital gowns, wound dressings — must meet significantly higher standards than industrial products.
Key Regulatory Requirements
FDA 21 CFR Compliance
For products sold in the US market, hook and loop materials must comply with FDA 21 CFR regulations for materials in contact with skin. This requires:
- Biocompatibility testing per ISO 10993
- Cytotoxicity testing (ISO 10993-5)
- Sensitization testing (ISO 10993-10)
- Documentation of all raw materials
OEKO-TEX® Standard 100
The most widely recognized textile safety certification globally. Class I certification (for baby products and items in direct skin contact) requires testing for:
- pH value (4.0–7.5 for skin contact)
- Formaldehyde content (<20 mg/kg for Class I)
- Heavy metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, etc.)
- Pesticide residues
- Allergenic dyes
- Chlorinated phenols
EN 13795 (Surgical Drapes & Gowns)
For hook and loop used in surgical textiles, EN 13795 requires specific performance levels for microbial barrier, linting and tensile strength.
