Fire Safety in Aviation: Non-Negotiable
Aircraft cabin interior materials are subject to some of the world's most stringent fire safety regulations. The FAA's FAR 25.853 standard governs all materials used in aircraft cabins, including hook and loop fasteners.
Understanding FAR 25.853
FAR 25.853 requires cabin interior materials to pass:
- Vertical burn test: Self-extinguishing within 15 seconds, burn length <15cm
- Horizontal burn test: Burn rate <64mm/min
- Smoke density: Ds(4) <200 (NBS smoke chamber)
- Heat release: Peak HRR <65 kW/m², total HR <65 kW·min/m²
UL94 V-0: The Gold Standard
UL94 V-0 is the highest flammability rating for plastics and textiles:
- Self-extinguishing within 10 seconds after flame removal
- No dripping of flaming particles
- Total burn time <50 seconds for 5 specimens
Our flame retardant hook and loop achieves UL94 V-0 through:
- FR-PA66 (flame-retardant nylon) hook construction
- FR-PET (flame-retardant polyester) loop construction
- Limiting Oxygen Index (LOI) ≥28%
- Halogen-free formulation available
Applications in Aerospace
- Seat components: Hook and loop for seat cover attachment and adjustment
- Overhead bin liners: Securing acoustic and thermal insulation
- Cargo compartments: Restraint systems and cargo net attachment
- Maintenance access panels: Quick-release fastening for inspection access
- Galley equipment: Securing loose items during turbulence
